Also, wouldn't this shorter version work?

function synchronize(fn) {
           var lock = new java.util.concurrent.locks.ReentrantLock()
           return function() {
               lock.lock()
               try {
                   return fn.apply(this, arguments)
               }
               finally {
                   lock.unlock()
               }
           }
}
