Hi Neal. Back again, already :-) I hope you'll answer another question. 
I just noticed a reply to the list which did not come to me personally 
(I am not subscribed) and which referred to the latest JVM spec:

The JVM spec appears to indicate that SYNTHETIC merely means not present 
in the source code. The associated thread mentioned something about the 
language spec providing a different  meaning. Can you explain where 
exactly your definition above comes from?
