The only effort that I know of is trying to integrate the GNU Classpath
webplugin code with the generic appletviewer as found in openjdk:
http://icedtea.classpath.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=38
Since gcjwebplugin already works with most variants of GNU/Linux
mozilla-like browsers on all architectures that GNU Classpath/gcj is
available on that would automagically get you amd64 support.
As far as I know Sun has not given any indication if/when the old,
proprietary (encumbered?) plugin code would be released under the GPL.
