I will report once the test system is back.

Meanwhile, may I suggest a thing? I do not really guess the amount of effort
and resource and who will provide that, but the suggestion is this:

1.As the java vm is not tied to kernel version or distribution version, there
can be one common repository of open java with each build and version
permanently sitting on the respository.
2.The respository can be common pool to all distributions, with support for
apt-get and yum, both. OR else the repository can be just source repository and
the distributions can mirror it and add binaries to it. I do not know if there
is an LSB standard for java in Linux, but that can help in the maintenance of a
common pool.
3. Users can pull what java they want from this, rather than getting tied to
distribution.

As I guess, building java vm is no trivial task and and even experienced system
admins may feel it daunting. But a sudden break like this will force
distributions like Opensuse to either maintain separate packages for i586 /
i686 architectures or discontinue supporting i586 architecture altogether. Such
an eventuality will leave special application developers / enthusiasts without
the option of any generic distro.
