OK. Updated.

I am strongly against a single-line block on the new line

   if (s == null)
       return -1;

but think it's OK to write them on a single line.

BTW, some funny codes:

   void day_of_my_life() {
      ...
      if (hour > 9 && hour < 18)
         goto work;
         goto work;

      time_to_play();
   }
